Aug 11, 2014 · I have a Chillzilla-type counterflow chiller and I like it a lot. I had a home made counterflow chiller and that was problematic to use. The unit has a low flow restriction, so I don't believe that a pump is required with the right gravity setup. You should probably have a valve on the kettle. However, a pump is extremely handy.

My version of a wort chiller is know as a counter-flow chiller (CFC) which runs the wort through straight 1/2" copper pipe that is encased by straight 3/4" pipe. The cold water runs through the 3/4" pipe and cools the wort down on its journey through the many sections. One advantage to this design is the 1/2" diameter of the tubing.

A plate chiller can have a cooling time of 10 to 15 minutes (depending on the season) for a 5 gallon brew.
Even if the copper tubing chiller saves 10 minutes of chill time, when you are done you still need to clean the copper tubing. To me that is worth waiting an extra 10 minutes for the wart to chill. Also as I pointed out earlier, the introduction of an immersion chiller into your wort brings with it the possibility of introducing contamination.

I have it attached to my 1/2", 50' copper wort chiller, which can drop my 5 to 10 gallon wort temperatures over 100 degrees (F) in about 2 minutes. Overall, I prefer this option over counterflow or plate chillers because it cools the entire kettle of wort all at the same time, allowing me to control my hopstand time with more precision.

Everything else in the system is typical of a counterflow chilling setup - the wort is pumped through the counterflow chiller and cools as the water warms.
